Protest has its own romance. The problem is that it has been tried before and invariably led to disenchantment and subsequent anger. The slow self-realisation that some people are — what Lenin called — ‘useful idiots’ in a larger game can trigger bitterness. In the wider world, it can provoke a vicious reaction.
